I may be a vet student on a full-time basis, but my inner ski-bum emerges sometime in late November to early December as I await the opening of my favorite mountain, Kirkwood. This year, Kirkwood opened pretty early after it got slammed with a storm that dropped over 10 feet of snow in a just a few days! I was in New York for much of the snowfall, but watched the snow level rise on the mountain’s live webcam.
Now, here I am, 1 week before finals and my mountain is open. This may pose a conflict for some (ski or study?) but not for me. I can always manage to squeeze studying in when I’m pressed for time, so I choose to ski. Once again, this is something I do for my sanity, because it is something I have done for over 24 years and there are few things that make me as happy as plummeting at over 50 miles down steep slopes of the winter wonderland that is Kirkwood.
I suppose my angst to get on the slopes is also being fueled by my desire to finally, after months of waiting, get my new skis out on the slopes and experience for myself what everyone has been raving about. I’ve got them all tuned up, fit them for my new boots and I’m ready to go!
UPDATE: The skiing was amazing. My new skis were phenomenal and the powder was heavenly! What an amazing first day of the season!
